If you ask most people what a physical therapist does, the most common answer you would get is, “Physical Therapists walk people.” That answer couldn’t be further from the truth. If you have encountered a physical therapist that only “walks” you or someone you know, please do yourself and the state board a favor and report them ASAP! Physical Therapists do so much more than what most people think. Keep reading to find out 5 little known skills of Physical Therapists (Hint: NONE of them include “walking people”).

    1. Wound Care: Nurses and physicians aren’t the only healthcare professionals that treat wounds. Physical Therapists are as well! From debridement to staple removal, Physical Therapists are thoroughly trained in healing wounds and can further specialize in wound care.
    2. Lymphedema: Physical Therapists can effectively treat lymphedema, no matter where it is in the body. They are trained in all aspects of it, from drainage to wrapping. Like wound care, Physical Therapists can become lymphedema specialists with further study.
    3. Balance: Having balance issues? Look no further! Did you know that Physical Therapists are the only healthcare professionals who can effectively diagnose and naturally treat balance? Most balance issues are caused by vestibular and/or musculoskeletal issues which can be fixed without medication.
    4. Stretching: Have you ever had your tibialis anterior stretched? Or ulnar nerve? Being so thoroughly and crucially trained in the musculoskeletal system, Physical Therapists are experts on stretching the tiniest nerves and muscles that restrict movement and cause discomfort.
    5. Massage: No disrespect to massage therapists, but Physical Therapists perform excellent massages! In addition, they can also mobilize bones (joint mobilization) that may be causing tension in the muscle(s) that need to be massaged.

To sum it up, Physical Therapists are one of the most versatile healthcare professionals in the world. They work in nearly all areas of healthcare, from cardiology to urology. Their valuable skill set varies widely and research proves that they can save a lot of money in healthcare costs.
